چکیده

There IS increasing concern about the effects of nutrient removal associated with various forest harvesting practices on long-term sate productivity. We measured exchangeable soil cation concentration responses to a commercial clearcut sawlog harvest in mixed hardwoods on a 59.ha watershed in the southern Appalachians. Soils were sampled 17 months prior to, and periodically for I7 years after, harvest. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, and K, increased significantly in the O-IO-cm soil layer for 3 years following harvest compared to pre-treatment levels. Concentrations of Mg and K were still significantly above pretreatment levels 17-X years following harvest. Calcium concentrations did not change significantly at the IO-30 cm depth, but both Mg and K showed significantly higher concentrations m some post-treatment years. Soils in the adjacent reference watershed showed ?io significant changes in soil cation concentrations over the same l7-year period. Results indicate that sawlog harvest using cable-yarding techniques on these sites does not adversely impact soil cation concentrations. b 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. Forest Management Effects on Surface Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Jennifer

Changes in surface soil C and N can resuh from forest management practices and may provide an index of impacts on long-term site productivity. Soil C and N were measured over time for five watersheds in the southern Appalachians: two aggrading hardwood forests, one southand one north-facing, undisturbed since the 1920s; a white pine (Pinus strobus L.) plantation planted in 1956; and two regener...

Effects of forest management on soil carbon: results of some long-term resampling studies.

The effects of harvest intensity (sawlog, SAW; whole tree, WTH; and complete tree, CTH) on biomass and soil C were studied in four forested sites in the southeastern US (mixed deciduous forests at Oak Ridge, TN and Coweeta, NC; Pinus taeda at Clemson, SC: and P. eliottii at Bradford, FL). In general, harvesting had no lasting effects on soil C. However, intensive temporal sampling at the NC and...

Effects of forest management on soil C and N storage: meta analysis

The effects of forest management on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are important to understand not only because these are often master variables determining soil fertility but also because of the role of soils as a source or sink for C on a global scale. This paper reviews the literature on forest management effects on soil C and N and reports the results of a meta analysis of these data. The...

Effects of long-term municipal waste compost application on the concentrations of macro elements and yield of rice

An experiment was conducted as randomized complete block design with three replications and 14 fertilizer treatments in year 2014. The treatments were including the control, application of chemical fertilizers according the soil analysis, application of 15, 30 and 45 tons of municipal  waste compost per ha as simple and with 25, 50 and 75% of chemical fertilizers. The results revealed that the ...

Temporal Variations of Fire Effects on Dissolved Nutrient Concentrations and Runoff amount in Zrebar Lake Watershed

Fire causes destructive effects on soil, water and components of wetland ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fire on runoff amount and nutrient concentration of Zrebar Lake watershed between 2014 and 2017 and the return of burned areas to their natural conditions in the short, medium and long term. The results showed that in the fourth year after the fire, the am...
